About This Adventure

A dying dragon's final wish isn't treasure. It's forgiveness.

The descendants of Hearthhollow have waited 800 years for this moment. The dragon who burned their ancestors is finally dying, and they've hired adventurers to finish her. The money is good. The cause seems just. Classic dragonslaying quest.

But nothing is what it seems. The kobold raiders on the mountain serve a different dragon. The ghosts of Hearthhollow weep instead of rage. And when players finally reach the lair, they find no hoard of gold, just paintings of a village that no longer exists, and a dying dragon who asks only to be heard before she dies. The villagers weren't stealing her eggs that terrible day. They were saving them from a landslide. She burned innocents who were trying to help her.

The Last Ember is a 3-4 hour adventure that turns the dragonslaying quest on its head. Players will fight through a rival dragon's forces, uncover an 800-year-old tragedy, and face an impossible choice: complete the contract and doom the descendants to a cruel new master, or defy their employers and fight for a remorseful dragon's right to die in peace. Four distinct endings mean your players' choices, and their capacity for forgiveness, shape everything.

This adventure gives GMs everything they need: Steadily building mystery with planted clues, an emotional revelation that recontextualizes everything, combat against the RIGHT enemy, and a climax where the hardest fight isn't against a monster. It's for the soul of a family that's been wrong for centuries.

What's Inside

Scene-by-scene journey:

  • The Job: Accept a dragonslaying contract from descendants seeking generational vengeance, but notice the details that don't add up
  • The Mountain Pass: Fight through an ambush that raises the first questions. These minions serve the wrong dragon

  • The Hoard of Memories: Meet a dying dragon who doesn't fight, and experience the vision that changes everything
  • The Reckoning: Fight the real enemy while the descendants must choose between 800 years of hatred and a terrible new truth

Key NPCs:

  • Elder Brennan: The descendant leader who's certain of his cause until he isn't
  • Sera Ashfall: The angry warrior whose rage masks deeper grief, hardest to convince
  • Young Tam: The ten-year-old who asks the questions adults won't: "If she's evil, why did she leave us alone?"
  • Mira's Spirit: The elder who died saving the eggs, waiting 800 years to offer forgiveness

Key features:

  • Emotional revelation delivered through shared dragon memory
  • Combat against the right villain (Vexarith) with potential dragon ally support
  • Four distinct endings from Redemption to Vengeance, all meaningful
  • A "villain" who's been the protector all along, and descendants who've been wrong for centuries
